During their Sunday sermons, more than 30 pastors across our country endorsed or opposed political candidates. The pastors were participating in Pulpit Freedom Sunday, part of an effort called the Pulpit Initiative designed to protect the First Amendment rights of pastors in the pulpit. Pastors' political sermons directly violate a law that bans tax-exempt organizations, like churches, from involvement in political campaigns.
The people behind the Pulpit Initiative are the Alliance Defense Fund, http://www.alliancedefensefund.org/. The group says they will fight for their First Amendment rights in court if the government calls them out for what they said on Sunday.
